Biography

Dr Mohammad Abbas Uddin (Shiyak) is currently Assistant Professor at the Department of Dyes and Chemical Engineering, Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX). He has completed his PhD from the University of Manchester, the UK, under Commonwealth Scholarship, MBA from Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka, Masters from Curtin University of technology with Australian Development Scholarship, and a graduate in Textile Technology from the College of Textile Technology, The University of Dhaka. He is a Chartered Fellow of The Textile Institute UK (CText FTI).
Dr Uddin has over 18 years of experience in textile and garment production, academic research and environmental consultancy. He is considered as a hybrid between technical excellence and business intellect. He is passionate about developing the industrial sector of Bangladesh organically through research and development, creating a new generation of social and environmental champions and liaise between industry and academia for future needs.
Dr Uddin is one of the team members of ‘creating a strategic vision for the university to be in the global education ranking.’ He is also Assistant Coordinator for facilitating and developing skill-based learning materials for future skills in collaboration with Aspire to Innovate (a2i), and Assistant Director in Skills For Employment Investment Program (SEIP) project for developing skills for executives in the Textile and RMG sector to build world-class managers in association with Ministry of Finance, the Government of Bangladesh.
Dr Uddin is Co-author of the ‘National Chemical Management Guideline for Textile and Apparel Industry’ by the Ministry of Commerce and a taskforce member for the Ministry of Commerce. He co-authored a book titled ‘Manual for Sludge Management in Bangladesh Textile Sector’. He is a certified trainer for ‘Chemical Management’ and ‘Sludge Management’ for Textile industry for GIZ and ‘Dyehouse Management’ by Textile Institute UK. He trained representatives from more than 100 textile factories, 20 government officials from the Department of Environment (DoE), brand representatives and service providers. He is an Associate Editor for Bangladesh Textile Today magazine and speaker and panellist in local and international seminars/workshops/conferences. He is also a reviewer of many journals in the textile field.
Before joining BUTEX in 2017, he led and responsible for various consultancy projects for water, energy, waste, wastewater, and sludge management and worked for various development organisations such as the German Development Agency (GIZ) Dhaka, International Finance Corporation (IFC)- The World Bank, Canadian High Commission, Dhaka, British High Commission Dhaka, The Nordic Chamber of Commerce Dhaka etc. He is currently working as an expert for GIZ FABRIC, STILE, other projects on chemical management, environmental assessment, sludge management, etc.
